Challenge Guidelines

Eligibility:

  • Open to K-12 students.
  • Participants can join individually or in teams (up to 3 students per team).
  • Parent or guardian consent is required for participants under 18.

Categories:

Entries will be grouped and judged within these grade categories:

  • Lower Grades (K-5)
  • Middle Grades (6-8)
  • High School (9-12)

Challenge Structure:

In the Critical Thinking Challenge, students are invited to identify a problem or scenario from their own experiences or community, and present how they applied critical thinking to develop a solution. This could be a real-world problem, a personal challenge, or a hypothetical situation they find interesting. The structure is designed to give students the freedom to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills in a way that’s meaningful to them.

Problem Identification:

Students must choose a problem or scenario that resonates with them, either from their own life, community, or a global issue. This could range from everyday problems (e.g., how to improve recycling at home) to broader societal challenges (e.g., finding ways to combat climate change).

Critical Thinking Process:

Students must demonstrate how they used critical thinking to analyze the problem, explore different solutions, and choose the best approach. This should include:

  • Problem Analysis: Identifying the root cause(s) of the problem.
  • Solution Exploration: Evaluating different potential solutions and weighing the pros and cons of each.
  • Implementation: Explaining how the chosen solution can or was put into action.

Presentation:

Participants must present their solution in a clear and organized manner. They can choose to submit their work in one of the following formats:

  • Written Report: A well-organized written explanation (max 500 words).
  • Video Presentation: A video demonstrating the problem, the thought process, and the solution (max 5 minutes).
  • Creative Medium: Other formats such as diagrams, artwork, or interactive elements, with a clear explanation of the process used.

Evaluation:

Submissions will be evaluated based on:

  • Problem Relevance: How well the student identified and explained the problem.
  • Critical Thinking: Depth of analysis and the ability to explore multiple perspectives before reaching a solution.
  • Creativity: Innovative approaches to problem-solving and originality in thinking.
  • Clarity: How well the student communicates the problem and their solution.
  • Real-world Impact: The feasibility of the solution in addressing the problem effectively.

Submission Requirements:

  • Entries must be the student’s original work.
  • The submission format (written, video, etc.) must follow the guidelines for each age group.

Awards:

  • Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade category.
  • Entries that receive recognition may also be featured on the Curiosity Research Foundation website.
